“Look for the moments between moments.”
Last year, I visited Bryson City, NC with my family to experience the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. The views were breathtaking, and cherishing moments with family is invaluable. I anticipated not just a relaxing time but also a fantastic opportunity for photography. We arrived the night before our train journey, settled into the charming house we’d call home for the next few days, and spent some time discovering Bryson City.

The following morning, I rose early, feeling a creative urge to embark on a photography walk. I took numerous shots deemed beautiful and captivating—the one above being a favorite—yet they were, by and large, effortless captures.

Hours later, we settled into our seats on the open-air car. Among all the photos I took that day, the top three were my choice. Pause and consider each one closely. There have been instances when I’ve been too preoccupied or rushed to savor the present moment, much less the “extraordinary moments within the moments.” The three pictures you’ve just reviewed embody my commitment to that very principle: being present, not preoccupied with our final stop or my “to-do” list, or anything else for that matter.
The three photographs were snapped as the train sped along, yet they managed to seize the moment. In my view, these images showcase not just the land’s beauty and complex perspectives but also serve as a reminder to remain present and focused.
